Unlike in the diamond industry – where the GIA has created a universally accepted and used grading system – in the colored gemstones world, each gemological laboratory has so far used different nomenclatures for describing the quality factors of colored gemstones and there has never been a uniform and globally accepted terminology.

GEM GRADING

ICL has developed its own complete system to grade the quality factors of colored gemstones, in a digestible and consumer friendly way.

Classification of colors into 21 primary and secondary hues Color grading divided into 7 different color intensities Clarity grading divided into 5 different grades

ICL CLARITY GRADES

Clarity in colored gemstones is assessed mostly with the unaided eye at a distance of about 40cm. ICL classifies all colored gemstones clarity in 6 different grades. 
Eye Clean 1 (EC1) : Free of inclusions while looking with the unaided eye and very few inclusions visible while looking with a loupe. This is considered the finest clarity for coloured gemstones. Potential other names : Top eye clean, Very minor inclusions, Very very slightly included VVS.
Eye Clean 2 (EC2) : Free of inclusions while looking with the unaided eye.
Potential other names : Eye clean, Minor inclusions, Very slightly included (VS).
Visible Inclusions 1 (VI1) : Inclusions very slightly visible with the unaided eye.
Potential other names : Slightly Included (SI).
Visible Inclusions 2 (VI2) : Inclusions slightly visible with the unaided eye.
Potential other names : Moderately Included (MI). 
Included 1 (I1) : Inclusions highly visible with the unaided eye.
Included 2 (I2) : Inclusions very highly visible with the unaided eye.
